Way Dynamic – Miffed It
/Spoilsport Records
Hey buddy? Ya done goofed. You beefed it. You fucked up. Sorry. Happens to all of us.
The latest single from Way Dynamic is a beautiful, enchanting, and tender-hearted ditty that circles around the unshakable knowledge that you messed up and there’s no going back. Based out of Melbourne, Way Dynamic is a revivalist pop project spearheaded by Dylan Young, who enlisted a talented roster of backing musicians to fill these songs out with everything from pedal steel and upright bass to clarinet. If you’re looking for a co-sign, this spring Way Dynamic opened for MJ Lenderman during the Australian leg of the Manning Fireworks tour. In fact, “Miffed It” only wound up on my radar after Colin Miller shared the song on Instagram, so if you liked the dusty, heartbroken sound of Losin’ (which, we did), it’s safe to say you’ll probably love the understated approach of Way Dynamic.
“Miffed It” opens with this fun little drum fill that pings around your speakers for a few beats before it’s joined by a simple acoustic guitar. As the guitar alternates between a swishy chord progression and nifty fingertapped riff, Young enters the fray, softly crooning the song’s namesake and setting the stakes in the simplest of terms. “I miffed it / and that’s the way it’s gonna stay,” he sings of his own irreversible blunder. Throughout the rest of the first verse, he uses the same rhyme scheme to fill the listener in on more details, admitting “I miss you,” “I tricked you,” and explaining that “things won’t ever be the same again.”
Eventually, a harmonium joins in, followed shortly by a squeaky, low-humming violin, each instrument adding a beautiful new layer to the revelations spelled out in the lyrics. Eventually, time passes, shame resides, and the end presents itself as a way out from the racked consciousness of our narrator.
Following the jazzy “People Settle Down” and the slightly twangy “I Was The Dancer,” “Miffed It” is the third (and presumably, final) single before the Way Dynamic’s third album, Massive Shoe, releases later this month. If these three songs are any indication, we’re in for a great treat when the rest of the collection drops.
