In Bedrooms – Out Comes Crazy

Pure Chance

Sometimes, great music just finds you. A lucky stroke of the algorithm that leads to your new favorite song. The rare swipe of social media that results in something good. A random pull from your friend’s 10,000-song playlist that just so happens to ignite your latest obsession. When you run a music blog, these opportunities seem to increase tenfold, mostly thanks to a densely populated social media feed and an ever-replenishing inbox of messages from bands, record labels, PR people, and spambots. Sometimes it’s overwhelming, but it’s all part of the game, and every once in a while, it leads to something incredible. The latest in this long line of self-presenting discoveries is the Guam-based alternative rock band In Bedrooms.

Released on the independent record label Pure Chance, the latest song from In Bedrooms is a breezy single that acts as something of a fresh chapter for the band. While the trio’s previous output tended to default toward a shoegazy style that some readers might feel a bit inundated with, “Out Comes Crazy” is a shimmering pop-rock masterclass with a punchy synth-rock edge.

The song starts with a few emo guitar strums and energetic drumming, but what really grabbed me was the band’s use of synthesizers. This immediately placed the song in a vibrant Easycore lane to a pop-punk poisoned brain like mine, but probably evokes a bit more Motion City Soundtrack or Tigers Jaw to the well-adjusted indie rock fans out there. Singer/guitarist Ant Sablan paints a liminal picture of laying it all on the line and getting nothing in return. Through lyrics rendered in dreamy Peripheral Vision-like production, we hear relatable lines of being backed against the wall, empty in the head, and barely breaking even. While that hardly sounds like a good time, the band swaddles everything in this melody that sticks to your brain like bubblegum, hopefully just the first taste of more sugary sweet pop-rock to be exported from the project this year.
